In other cases, fertility can be preserved in time, a premeditated decision that must be made regarding future motherhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is no treatment to restore fertility, women with premature ovarian insufficiency can <\/span><b>freeze their own eggs or embryos fertilized <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with their partner&#8217;s or a donor&#8217;s sperm, or opt for innovative treatments like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.juanacrespo.es\/en\/treatment\/revitalize\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revitalize Ovary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If these fertility preservation techniques are not performed in time, the only option may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.juanacrespo.es\/en\/treatment\/egg-donation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">egg donation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to achieve pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is premature ovarian insufficiency?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menopause marks the end of a woman&#8217;s fertile life, usually occurring between <\/span><b>45 and 55 years old<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, some women experience ovarian failure and begin this process earlier. Premature ovarian insufficiency, or premature ovarian failure, is <\/span><b>the loss of ovarian function before the age of 40<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, these women have a deficiency in estrogen (female sex hormones) and progesterone in their blood, and may experience premenopausal symptoms such as absent periods, sweating, or vaginal dryness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Causes of premature ovarian insufficiency and possible risk factors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although its incidence is low (occurring in 1 out of 100 women under 40 and 1 out of 1000 women under 30), fertility preservation in cases of premature ovarian insufficiency is quite common in our clinic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To diagnose POI, a thorough medical history, <\/span><b>physical, and gynecological examination of the woman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood tests are also conducted to <\/span><b>determine her levels of the hormones FSH and estradiol<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: if FSH hormone levels are high and estradiol levels are low, ovarian function is compromised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some causes of premature ovarian insufficiency are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genetic alterations, chromosomal defects affecting the X chromosome (Fragile X syndrome, Turner syndrome).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure to toxins (including chemotherapy and radiotherapy in cancer patients).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enzymatic or metabolic defects (galactosemia, hemochromatosis, etc.).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autoimmune diseases, such as hypothyroidism.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infections by Herpes, Zoster, or cytomegalovirus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the risk factors associated with premature ovarian insufficiency, the following may be cited:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age (premature loss of ovarian function is more common after 35 years, although it may occur earlier).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family history.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgeries in the area that may compromise ovarian function (for example, to treat endometriosis).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In any case, premature ovarian insufficiency often has an unknown origin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Is premature ovarian insufficiency the same as menopause?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premature ovarian insufficiency is often defined as a kind of <\/span><b>&#8220;early menopause.&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it&#8217;s not exactly the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, menopause involves a total or near-total depletion of ovarian reserve, while <\/span><b>some women with premature ovarian insufficiency may continue to ovulate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> intermittently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, in so-called occult ovarian insufficiency (OOI), there are regular menstruations despite elevated FSH levels, which pose pregnancy possibilities. This situation can persist until 3-4 years before menopause.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How does premature ovarian insufficiency affect female fertility?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effects of premature ovarian insufficiency on fertility are evident: in these women, regardless of age, difficulties in achieving pregnancy are common due to lack of ovulation and low estrogen levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In only <\/span><b>5-10% of cases is it possible to achieve a &#8220;natural&#8221; pregnancy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with spontaneous ovulation, and it is also necessary for the disorder to be non-permanent and for the ovary to maintain some activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, <\/span><b>ovarian stimulation for IVF<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in these cases has worse results because, although between 30 and 40 years of age it is still possible to obtain good embryos with one&#8217;s own eggs, their low number may compromise treatment success.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fertility preservation techniques in premature ovarian insufficiency<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many questions related to ovarian insufficiency are brought to our clinic, including whether it can be prevented or if there is any type of treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention will be entirely conditioned by the <\/span><b>cause of ovarian failure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although if the cause is unknown or the diagnosis is delayed, prevention may be practically impossible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, it is hardly possible to
